Both Monster and Incognegro are novels that show mistreatment of African Americans and white privilege. In Monster, Steve and other Black characters were automatically labeled "monsters" before the trial even began and I think that made them seem like they were below the White characters right away. In Incognegro, a similar situation occurs. With all the hangings, murders, and threats, the Black characters were also put onto the bottom of society. Power is shown to belong in the hands of White people especially in Incognegro. The uneven and unfair distribution of power led to a lot of bloodshed simply because the Whites thought they were better and therefore deserved to "rule" over everyone else. Monster is showing racism in a more modern time period. Just because someone is of a minority, doesn't mean they should automatically be labeled guilty or a "monster" for instance. The novels show that from the earlier time periods of racism, as shown in Incognegro, to more modern situations shown in Monster, the level of hatred and unfairness may have diminished, but it is still definitely prevalent and hopefully we will be able to see racist actions lower even further in our lifetimes.

I like what you said about the novels representing both historic and modern examples of racism and abuse of power. I think in both novels the whites were able to control the fates of african americans, whether it be by killing them, or putting them away with a life or death sentence. Either way, the black people were treated as the lesser race.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that both the novels show racism in different time periods. In both the novels white people thought they were better, and they viewed black people as being on the bottom of society. They showed hatred towards them which led to killing them (in Incognegro) or seeing them as guilty right away (in Monster).
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interseting how you mentioned Monster as a more moderan version of racism and discrimination. I think its basiclly the same story just in a different time period. An African American is accused of a crime they didn't commit based on their skin color.
ReplyDeleteTime has definitely lessened the severity of racism. In Incognegro they hung the man and their is definitely a big difference between time periods because Steve is just sent to trial. I think that is really somthing interesting to look at.
