I believe that hatred is learned. A child cannot simply be born already hating someone. They would have to learn it from their parents or other people, or their surroundings. As seen in "A Class Divided" the children very quickly learned and imitated their teacher's ideas about how the other eye colored children were better. They immediately turned on their friends, and began fighting with them and putting them down. It was amazing to me how quickly this process happened. As also seen with the experiment with the adults, after being insulted, they also became very defensive and began badgering their colleagues of the opposing eye color. If an experiment such as this can produce these results, imagine what would happen if discrimination were to become more prominent again. I personally wouldn't want to be around to see those results.

  1. I agree with you that hatred is not an innate quality that we are born with. It isn't something that is essential to human nature and survival or we would be born with it. It is a quality that is based on perception and I think perception is something that is often passed down through families and networks. This is evident through the "Class Divided" video as you mentioned because the kids had no prejudice or hatred before they were influenced in that direction by their teacher.

  2. I think you're right that hatred is learned and not just a trait that you are born with. I found it particularly interesting the way the adults acted. They didn't speak up and stick together they let one or two people speak out and get badgered. They acted like they were children who didn't know better rather than like the adults they were.

  3. I completely agree that hatred is learned. People do not just decide to hate someone one day. They have to be around it. Most of the time our parents and friends have opinions and those opinions can become our own. Hatred is just another opinion about someone that can rub off on people around you. Especially if you grow up around it. "A Class Divided" is a great example because the teacher influences the children to act the way they did.
