Blog #2

When I first came to the comic "Prisoner on the Hell Planet" I was a little surprised by it. The author drew humans instead of animals and I felt that by doing this it made us as the readers connect more with Artie's difficult situation. We could actually see real human facial expressions as opposed to animals and by looking at the images we can really feel the human suffering that Artie, as well as the others around him, went through Also, the fact that he drew himself in a prison uniform shows that he actually feels imprisoned by her death, that he is sort of trapped because he might blame himself for it, and doesn't really know how to deal with the pain. I was also really looking for an explanation as to why Anja committed suicide. I personally never really picked up on a reason why while I was reading.

  1. I agree that using animals in place of humans made us as readers connect more with Artie's struggle. It made the book more appealing in a way.. not as serious, even though it is a very serious book. I also think Art has alot of guilty emotions because of his mother's death and thats one of the reasons he drew himself in a prison uniform.

  2. I agree with what you have to say and what you picked up on while reading. It really helped us as the readers connect with the book when he used animals as the characters. And Changing from that when he wrote the hell planet part made very real and serious

  3. Spiegelman did a good job using animals to make it seem more emotional and deep. The dark shading and the tear running down his face made a painful impression. The prison scene was very graffic and it made it seem like he was blaming himself for her death.

  4. The symbolism in Artie's comic really shows with him being the prisoner. It shows how he blames himself for his mother's death and the guilt he's stored up for so many years. Spiegelman conveys this depressing and tormenting guilt well with the detailed facial expressions and the dark shading in the illustration. After looking at it for awhile it even begins to make you feel some sort of sadness.
